FOR ADULTS

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP)

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the gold standard evidence-based therapeutic intervention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). I know how hard it can be to find effective therapy for OCD. As an ERP trained therapist, I have the tools to teach you how to practice ERP, a proven method that gradually exposes you to anxiety-inducing thoughts, situations, or stimuli associated with OCD. By practicing refraining from habitual compulsions with my guidance, you will notice a gradual reduction in anxiety and gain better control over OCD symptoms, breaking free from the OCD cycle.

ERP involves two components:

Exposure: Deliberately confronting distress-inducing stimuli (e.g., germs, public spaces, elevators) triggering obsessive thoughts, ritualized behaviour, fear, or anxiety.

Response Prevention: Learning to tolerate distress without engaging in compulsive behaviour when exposed to stimuli, enabling individuals to release intrusive thoughts after being triggered by exposure.

Beyond its effectiveness in treating OCD, ERP can help various conditions, including eating disorders, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder, and other anxiety-related concerns. For trusted and specialized ERP therapy in Calgary, Alberta, book a free consultation with me to get to know more about my approach and see if it might be a fit for you. I’m dedicated to providing personalized, evidence-based solutions to help you manage and overcome OCD and related disorders.

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy might be right for you if you are experiencing:

ERP is the gold standard treatment for OCD, helping patients face their fears and reduce compulsive behaviors.

Specific phobias, such as fear of flying, heights, or animals, can be significantly reduced through ERP by gradually exposing patients to their fears in a controlled manner.

Through exposure to panic-inducing sensations in a safe environment, ERP helps reduce the fear associated with panic attacks.

It aids in gradually exposing individuals to social situations they fear, reducing avoidance behaviors and increasing social confidence.

ERP can be used to confront the worries and anxieties that pervade daily life, teaching patients to manage their reactions.

By confronting trauma-related triggers in a safe setting, ERP helps reduce the intensity of PTSD symptoms.

In the context of OCD-like symptoms within eating disorders, ERP can address food-related fears and rituals.

It helps patients confront obsessive worries about perceived flaws in their appearance, reducing compulsive checking or fixing behaviors.

ERP addresses the compulsive behaviors and excessive worry about having a serious illness, by exposing patients to these fears without allowing the compulsive checking or seeking reassurance.

ERP is used to challenge the distress associated with discarding items, gradually reducing hoarding behaviors.

Questions About
Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a personal session with a therapist where you talk about your feelings and problems. The therapist helps by listening, giving advice, and teaching you new ways to deal with your issues.

It’s different for everyone. Some people feel better after a few sessions, while others might take longer. It depends on what you’re dealing with and how much work you put into therapy.

Your therapist will suggest a schedule that works best for you. Often, it starts once a week. But it could be more or less often depending on what you need.

In your first session, you’ll talk about what’s been bothering you and what you want to get out of therapy. It’s a chance for you and your therapist to get to know each other and make a plan for your sessions.

Therapy can teach you ways to calm your mind, deal with sad or worrying thoughts, and handle stress better. Your therapist will work with you to find the best methods to make you feel more at ease.

Yes, individual therapy can help with a lot of problems, like relationship issues, self-esteem, and much more. It’s about working on whatever is making life hard for you.
